My book club of 30+ years combines these two loves--a gathering of friends who share a love of reading. And, I do love a good read. The perfect day for me is spent reading while sipping a cup of tea, dozing occasionally, reading some more, pausing to reflect; a long, lazy day of reading and savoring every word.

After the umpteenth book on the same subject or with the same feel, your members will long for a palate cleanser and may even—the book club kiss of death—take a break from reading the books.

My favorite way to troubleshoot this fatigue is to rotate through every member picking a book he or she wants to read. For example, at work you might have the theme of quality assurance, agile practices, or business analysis. Outside of work, a theme might be Oprah’s book-club picks or Pulitzer Prize winners.

Identify participants. Don’t just invite those with similar interests; also invite those with a different perspective or an opposing point of view.

Focus on a genre like romance, mystery, or fantasy. Picking a specific author can work, too. (In fact, there's a club in Modesto, California dedicated to Jane Austen novels.)
